Let’s get one thing straight right off the bat: midlife motherhood isn’t just hard—it’s a full-body, full-soul reckoning. Throw in addiction, mental health, or co-occurring issues, and forget about it. And the cruelest irony? No one really talks about it. Not in the real, gritty, hormone-fueled, emotionally-overloaded, “am I the only one?” kind of way. We’re going to take care of this today, though. Let’s talk.

We scroll social media and see filtered wins, but behind the curated feeds, there’s a wide array of issues that midlife moms are navigating: sleepless nights, warm bottles, early teens with middle school meltdowns, aging parents needing elder care, and bodies that are whispering (sometimes screaming) this is a new season. One most of us were never prepared for.

I want to say that my kids are my world. They hands down saved my life. I wouldn’t change any of it for the world. The day I found out I was pregnant with my daughter at the ripe old age of thirty-five was the last day I used substances.

That was nine years ago. I never wanted children. I was a heroin dealer who had sold drugs to support my habit. I knew that a kid was the last thing I needed. I knew my addiction was selfish, and I managed to evade pregnancy for a very long time until I didn’t. Suddenly, it wasn’t about 

me anymore. I had a purpose, and as it turns out, this was a really good thing for me.

It’s no contest for pros to my having children. It pushed me to be better and do better. It pushed me to go from heroin addicted inmate to entrepreneurial homeowner with a crypto portfolio. I cherish every second with my kids because I know how fleeting their childhoods can be. They are the only things in this world that can make me soul smile.

I found out when my daughter was six months old how it feels to be away from them. I went to jail for going to Hampton Beach for the day and was sentenced to nine months. I did three, only seeing my daughter for four hours every other week. 

Twenty years of going in and out of jail, and somehow I never cried. I cried every single day, all day, that I was away from my child. It was the worst, but it showed me that I won’t survive without them, and it made me truly appreciate all of my time with them.

Motherhood Is So Bittersweet

Watching so many women lose their children as a result of their addictions while I was in jail over those twenty years. The pain they endured was one of the reasons I hadn’t wanted children, and I have a feeling that if I had had my kids when I was younger, I would have lost them.

years off my life. I never said it was easy. It’s not.

Being a mom is the most amazing yet bittersweet role in the world. I love being a mom more than I love anything on this earth, but it is the most thankless, unappreciated, and extremely taken-for-granted position a woman can have. It’s hard sometimes, especially when you have a partner that you refer to as “bare minimum guy.” Yeah, that’s what I’m saying. That’s why we need one another. I swear I am here for you, girlfriend. I truly am. I feel your pain.

This is for every older mom who found herself in the parking lot of Party City with balloons in one hand and a prescription for high blood pressure in the other. For the woman raising young children in her early 40s, while secretly wondering if this stage of life is going to flipping kill her. For the midlife mothers working a successful career, keeping a marriage alive (or not), checking off an endless to-do list, feeling like there is never enough time, and feeling as though they’re failing at everything.

The Untold Reality of Motherhood in Midlife

In the United States, the birth rate for women over 35 continues to rise. From first-time moms in their late 30s to those embarking on parenting after remarriage, this group is growing—but our society still hasn’t caught up with its realities.

The societal norm for mothers with small children is women in early adulthood, definitely not a woman experiencing the hormonal mayhem of perimenopause, dreaming of their younger years, but it’s looking like this will be the societal norm. Apparently, we were the smart ones. Can you believe that?

The toll on our mental health is real. We rarely talk about the silent panic attacks, the common fears of bad things happening, or the exhaustion that’s different from what younger moms feel—not necessarily deeper, just more layered. There’s parenting, yes. But there’s also a life course of accumulated grief, stress, pressure, and unmet expectations riding alongside.

Throw in the rising risk of gestational diabetes, hormonal changes, and a growing list of health screenings, and you’ve got a balancing act between motherhood and mortality.

What should be the most joyous moments often come wrapped in emotional complexity. And unlike younger moms who tend to find instant community, midlife moms often feel like they’re parenting in a vacuum. I personally don’t have any friends.

My recovery aside, the non-addicted friends I had already raised their kids, and they were struggling with empty nest syndrome, so the last thing they want is to be around a bustling home full of small children.

We’re expected to have it all figured out by this point in our lives. We’re supposed to be “grateful.” But gratitude doesn’t cancel out the overwhelm. We’re climbing the corporate ladder, dealing with the rising risk of physical health issues, trying to keep a support system intact, trying to revive dead relationships with significant others, navigating short or long-term recoveries, and doing it all while society offers very little empathy for older women raising kids.

The Invisible Stats Behind Midlife Moms

Previous research shows a strong association between delayed motherhood and higher educational attainment, home ownership, and stable marital status. But behind that “success” lies another truth: we’re dealing with more responsibilities, higher levels of stress, much less time, fewer resources, and zero support.

Midlife moms often lack proximity to peer support. Younger moms may question our choices, and older women may judge our timing. When we turn to our primary care doctor due to being overwhelmed and exhausted, we are told it’s just a midlife crisis.

We are focused on continuing or building successful careers, all while waking up in the night to soothe toddlers—while simultaneously managing the impossible expectations of full-time employment. Some struggle with poor health, finding dependable childcare, and in some cases, elder care for their own aging parents, and don’t forget the rising prices and the financial burden for all of the above.

Many midlife moms, such as myself, quietly experience a death of identity. The friends we had in our 20s and 30s may now be free from childcare demands, while we’re navigating the complexities of our first birth and toddler tantrums. Those who had children young may not relate to our exhaustion or our deeper fears about health and mortality.

Your marital status might look fine on paper, but the intimacy has shifted. Some couples become roommates, bonded only by a shared Google calendar. Others become strangers, slowly losing themselves to the whirlpool of stress. My kid’s father and I have become like ships in the night. Any intimacy we once had has long fizzled, but I will be covering that in a future post. And if you’re a solo midlife mother, society can be especially harsh—still questioning your choices, your worth, your capabilities.

In this final model of womanhood, what once felt like a path to freedom is now filled with unspoken resentments and loneliness like we have never known.

Everyone in my household is in bed by 8:30 PM every night. That leaves me alone. Often, whenever something needs to be deep cleaned, painted, or fixed, it’s my sleep hours that are sacrificed. No matter what I do or how hard I try, there just isn’t enough time in the day. My bedtime somehow has become 3 am, and then up at 6:45 AM to get the kids up and ready for school. 

Laundry has to be done every single night, or it builds up and becomes impossible. It is the cycle that never ends after all. The only things I do for myself these days are a Supernatural VR workout on Oculus Quest 2 and a long shower every night before bed. It’s funny how quickly our needs fall to the wayside when our family has needs.

What’s the first step to staying grounded in all of this? Accountability partners. Emotional regulation. It’s time to reconnect with ourselves—even in ten-minute windows between snacks, Zoom meetings, and soccer practice.

We need to recognize that time management at this age isn’t about being more productive—it’s about being more present. It’s about naming our common fears, honoring our real life over the highlight reel, and letting ourselves off the hook for being everything to everyone.

We also need real, tangible support. A renewal of what was once a 50/50 partnership, maybe? This may help to quell the growing resentments we feel for our partner’s lack of involvement. Since we are no longer younger women, their interest in coming to our rescue had faded long ago.

I don’t know about the rest of you midlife mamas, but my partner’s lack has truly empowered me in ways I never imagined. He stopped helping me shortly after we bought our house and took up watching videos as a full-time second job.

I guess I automatically have to do all the hard work around this house since he chose a career in roofing, and I sit at a desk all day trying to build my blog, help people struggling, and saving lives working for the overdose prevention hotline as a second job. Working harder than I have ever worked with no pay, so we don’t have to work hard later, hopefully.

Apparently, this gives him the honor of watching his children’s mom, who has a mass of nine hernias that she can’t get taken care of because her house would get burned to the ground during the twelve weeks of recovery in bed after the surgery, carry stuff to the attic, paint the deck, blow leaves, fix my own car usintg a YouTube Video, cut wood, use my awesome pink power tools, blow leaves, blow snow, and you get the idea. He will watch be roll by struggling, sweating, and turning purple. Funny how they can do that, isn’t it?

Must be nice to be younger women in their trendy cafés with swaddled infants and perfect makeup and hair, but cheers to the midlife moms managing ice cream stains on their blouses, power tools in their hands, and resentments on their minds while our partners are Googling Nate Berkus’ for a deep dive on interior design and listening to BIlly Joel. (They may as well. The pu##ies.)

We flipping rock. No matter how awful you feel, I am here to tell you that as ’90s chicks (women born in the 80s who were teens in the 90s), we are the only of our kind, and soon we will age out, and we will never be recognized for our strength and awesomeness again. (Not that we were much to begin with, but WE know.)

I know I’m a bad ass and no matter how exhausted I become or how much frustratration or resentments I feel NOBODY can take away my bad assery, and NOBODY can take away your bad assery. That ish comes from within. So, there.

We need books that speak our truth. We need platforms that don’t reduce us to jokes about MILFs, memory loss, and midlife ADHD. We need a deep dive into what it means to parent now—not 20 years ago.

One thing I will say is as much as I rock, my kids rock so much more. They might not listen to me, but they are amazing kids and they saved my life. If not for them I wouldnt be here trying to help other midlife moms. Midlife motherhood might not be easy, but I wouldn’t give it up for the world. My kids are keeping me youthful. There is nothing in the world like snuggling up on the couch with my two little’s with there little arms around me. I feel more love in those snuggles than I ever have in my life by far.

Despite everything, midlife motherhood is also a portal. It forces us to reckon with what matters. It invites us to burn down everything that doesn’t feel like our truth. And maybe, for the first time, we can build a life around what we want—not just what society says we should want at 25.

This is the possibility of midlife: that you’re not done. This new season will be your most important one yet. You might not be the gold standard of parenting. You might lose your cool once in a while. Kids might be spoiled rotten. You might show up late to daycare or high school pickup in your pajamas. But you’re showing up. Again and again. 

Let someone try to mess with your child(ren). We deeply love our children and would die for them, but we really messed up trying to give them everything that we never had because man, are these spoiled ass kids driving us nuts. We will get through this, and we will raise exceptional children who are not pu##ies because that is what the world needs.

Kids today are the furthest thing from tough, but we are bringing the next generation of kids, and these kids grew up with 90s moms. Oh, yeah. They sure did. They will be on a whole other level of badassery, and you know it, too.

For today, for now, I need you to know that you are not behind. You are not broken. You are not failing.

You’re just a midlife mom—and that makes you damn near unstoppable. You just needed to find your tribe, and now you have.

Twenty years of going in and out of jail, and somehow I never cried. I cried every single day, all day, that I was away from my child. It was the worst, but it showed me that I won’t survive without them, and it made me truly appreciate all of my time with them.

Motherhood Is So Bittersweet

Watching so many women lose their children as a result of their addictions while I was in jail over those twenty years. The pain they endured was one of the reasons I hadn’t wanted children, and I have a feeling that if I had had my kids when I was younger, I would have lost them.
Being older had a more profound effect on me, and because of that, I genuinely cherish every second of raising my kids, even the ones where they are subtracting

years off my life. I never said it was easy. It’s not.
Being a mom is the most amazing yet bittersweet role in the world. I love being a mom more than I love anything on this earth, but it is the most thankless, unappreciated, and extremely taken-for-granted position a woman can have. It’s hard sometimes, especially when you have a partner that you refer to as “bare minimum guy.” Yeah, that’s what I’m saying. That’s why we need one another. I swear I am here for you, girlfriend. I truly am. I feel your pain.
This is for every older mom who found herself in the parking lot of Party City with balloons in one hand and a prescription for high blood pressure in the other. For the woman raising young children in her early 40s, while secretly wondering if this stage of life is going to flipping kill her. For the midlife mothers working a successful career, keeping a marriage alive (or not), checking off an endless to-do list, feeling like there is never enough time, and feeling as though they’re failing at everything.

The Untold Reality of Motherhood in Midlife

In the United States, the birth rate for women over 35 continues to rise. From first-time moms in their late 30s to those embarking on parenting after remarriage, this group is growing—but our society still hasn’t caught up with its realities.
The societal norm for mothers with small children is women in early adulthood, definitely not a woman experiencing the hormonal mayhem of perimenopause, dreaming of their younger years, but it’s looking like this will be the societal norm. Apparently, we were the smart ones. Can you believe that?
The toll on our mental health is real. We rarely talk about the silent panic attacks, the common fears of bad things happening, or the exhaustion that’s different from what younger moms feel—not necessarily deeper, just more layered. There’s parenting, yes. But there’s also a life course of accumulated grief, stress, pressure, and unmet expectations riding alongside.
Throw in the rising risk of gestational diabetes, hormonal changes, and a growing list of health screenings, and you’ve got a balancing act between motherhood and mortality.
What should be the most joyous moments often come wrapped in emotional complexity. And unlike younger moms who tend to find instant community, midlife moms often feel like they’re parenting in a vacuum. I personally don’t have any friends.
My recovery aside, the non-addicted friends I had already raised their kids, and they were struggling with empty nest syndrome, so the last thing they want is to be around a bustling home full of small children.

Jessi Klein, Cultural Myths, and the Missing Narrative

Jessi Klein, the Emmy award-winning writer, cracked open the conversation around motherhood with her eagerly anticipated second essay collection, I’ll Show Myself Out: Essays on Midlife and Motherhood (which I highly recommend), where she captured the tension between loving your child and mourning your old life. Her writing underscores the cultural myths around motherhood—that it should feel like purpose incarnate. For many midlife moms, the truth is a blend of cruel ironies: deep love, constant

exhaustion, and an invisible sense of isolation.
We’re expected to have it all figured out by this point in our lives. We’re supposed to be “grateful.” But gratitude doesn’t cancel out the overwhelm. We’re climbing the corporate ladder, dealing with the rising risk of physical health issues, trying to keep a support system intact, trying to revive dead relationships with significant others, navigating short or long-term recoveries, and doing it all while society offers very little empathy for older women raising kids.

The Invisible Stats Behind Midlife Moms

Previous research shows a strong association between delayed motherhood and higher educational attainment, home ownership, and stable marital status. But behind that “success” lies another truth: we’re dealing with more responsibilities, higher levels of stress, much less time, fewer resources, and zero support.
Midlife moms often lack proximity to peer support. Younger moms may question our choices, and older women may judge our timing. When we turn to our primary care doctor due to being overwhelmed and exhausted, we are told it’s just a midlife crisis.
We are focused on continuing or building successful careers, all while waking up in the night to soothe toddlers—while simultaneously managing the impossible expectations of full-time employment. Some struggle with poor health, finding dependable childcare, and in some cases, elder care for their own aging parents, and don’t forget the rising prices and the financial burden for all of the above.

The Truth About Friendship, Marriage & Identity

Many midlife moms, such as myself, quietly experience a death of identity. The friends we had in our 20s and 30s may now be free from childcare demands, while we’re navigating the complexities of our first birth and toddler tantrums. Those who had children young may not relate to our exhaustion or our deeper fears about health and mortality.

Your marital status might look fine on paper, but the intimacy has shifted. Some couples become roommates, bonded only by a shared Google calendar. Others become strangers, slowly losing themselves to the whirlpool of stress. My kid’s father and I have become like ships in the night. Any intimacy we once had has long fizzled, but I will be covering that in a future post. And if you’re a solo midlife mother, society can be especially harsh—still questioning your choices, your worth, your capabilities.
In this final model of womanhood, what once felt like a path to freedom is now filled with unspoken resentments and loneliness like we have never known.
Everyone in my household is in bed by 8:30 PM every night. That leaves me alone. Often, whenever something needs to be deep cleaned, painted, or fixed, it’s my sleep hours that are sacrificed. No matter what I do or how hard I try, there just isn’t enough time in the day. My bedtime somehow has become 3 am, and then up at 6:45 AM to get the kids up and ready for school. 
Laundry has to be done every single night, or it builds up and becomes impossible. It is the cycle that never ends after all. The only things I do for myself these days are a Supernatural VR workout on Oculus Quest 2 and a long shower every night before bed. It’s funny how quickly our needs fall to the wayside when our family has needs. 

A Deep Dive Into What Need

What’s the first step to staying grounded in all of this? Accountability partners. Emotional regulation. It’s time to reconnect with ourselves—even in ten-minute windows between snacks, Zoom meetings, and soccer practice.
We need to recognize that time management at this age isn’t about being more productive—it’s about being more present. It’s about naming our common fears, honoring our real life over the highlight reel, and letting ourselves off the hook for being everything to everyone.
We also need real, tangible support. A renewal of what was once a 50/50 partnership, maybe? This may help to quell the growing resentments we feel for our partner’s lack of involvement. Since we are no longer younger women, their interest in coming to our rescue had faded long ago.
I don’t know about the rest of you midlife mamas, but my partner’s lack has truly empowered me in ways I never imagined. He stopped helping me shortly after we bought our house and took up watching videos as a full-time second job.
I guess I automatically have to do all the hard work around this house since he chose a career in roofing, and I sit at a desk all day trying to build my blog, help people struggling, and saving lives working for the overdose prevention hotline as a second job. Working harder than I have ever worked with no pay, so we don’t have to work hard later, hopefully.
Apparently, this gives him the honor of watching his children’s mom, who has a mass of nine hernias that she can’t get taken care of because her house would get burned to the ground during the twelve weeks of recovery in bed after the surgery, carry stuff to the attic, paint the deck, blow leaves, fix my own car usintg a YouTube Video, cut wood, use my awesome pink power tools, blow leaves, blow snow, and you get the idea. He will watch be roll by struggling, sweating, and turning purple. Funny how they can do that, isn’t it?

We Flipping Rock!

Must be nice to be younger women in their trendy cafés with swaddled infants and perfect makeup and hair, but cheers to the midlife moms managing ice cream stains on their blouses, power tools in their hands, and resentments on their minds while our partners are Googling Nate Berkus’ for a deep dive on interior design and listening to BIlly Joel. (They may as well. The pu##ies.)
We flipping rock. No matter how awful you feel, I am here to tell you that as ’90s chicks (women born in the 80s who were teens in the 90s), we are the only of our kind, and soon we will age out, and we will never be recognized for our strength and awesomeness again. (Not that we were much to begin with, but WE know.)
I know I’m a bad ass and no matter how exhausted I become or how much frustratration or resentments I feel NOBODY can take away my bad assery, and NOBODY can take away your bad assery. That ish comes from within. So, there.
We need books that speak our truth. We need platforms that don’t reduce us to jokes about MILFs, memory loss, and midlife ADHD. We need a deep dive into what it means to parent now—not 20 years ago.
One thing I will say is as much as I rock, my kids rock so much more. They might not listen to me, but they are amazing kids and they saved my life. If not for them I wouldnt be here trying to help other midlife moms. Midlife motherhood might not be easy, but I wouldn’t give it up for the world. My kids are keeping me youthful. There is nothing in the world like snuggling up on the couch with my two little’s with there little arms around me. I feel more love in those snuggles than I ever have in my life by far. 

Midlife Motherhood Is Not a Failure—It's a Revolution

Despite everything, midlife motherhood is also a portal. It forces us to reckon with what matters. It invites us to burn down everything that doesn’t feel like our truth. And maybe, for the first time, we can build a life around what we want—not just what society says we should want at 25.
This is the possibility of midlife: that you’re not done. This new season will be your most important one yet. You might not be the gold standard of parenting. You might lose your cool once in a while. Kids might be spoiled rotten. You might show up late to daycare or high school pickup in your pajamas. But you’re showing up. Again and again. 
Let someone try to mess with your child(ren). We deeply love our children and would die for them, but we really messed up trying to give them everything that we never had because man, are these spoiled ass kids driving us nuts. We will get through this, and we will raise exceptional children who are not pu##ies because that is what the world needs.
Kids today are the furthest thing from tough, but we are bringing the next generation of kids, and these kids grew up with 90s moms. Oh, yeah. They sure did. They will be on a whole other level of badassery, and you know it, too.
For today, for now, I need you to know that you are not behind. You are not broken. You are not failing.
You’re just a midlife mom—and that makes you damn near unstoppable. You just needed to find your tribe, and now you have.

There’s a lot of misinformation and common myths circulating about opioid addiction, substance use disorders, and opioid use disorder (OUD). For many people in the United States, what they “know” comes from outdated health classes, fear-based campaigns, or viral social media posts — not from the health care providers or medical professionals who understand this as a chronic disease.
In recent years, the opioid crisis has taken a devastating toll. From prescription opioids and pain medication to street drugs like heroin laced with fentanyl, the risks have only intensified. Opioid overdose and drug overdose deaths continue to rise — especially among people who never thought they’d be at higher risk.

The First Step

I’ve spent over 20 years caught in the cycle of substance abuse, incarceration, loss, and hopelessness. I’ve lived what I now call “life on the installment plan.” I was using long before opioid use disorder was recognized as a medical condition by the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
Today, I have nine years of recovery. I’m a Certified Addiction Recovery & Life Coach, a homeowner, a Credit Repair Counselor, and the founder of this blog. I’ve survived a world that most people only read about — and now I’m here to shine a light on truth, science, and hope.
Let’s dismantle some of the most dangerous myths about opioid addiction using facts, research, and lived experience. This is the first step to healing and long-term change.

Myth #1: "You Can Get Addicted to Heroin After One Use"

We’ve all heard it: “One hit and you’re hooked.” That line has terrified generations, and while it’s rooted in caution, it’s also misleading.
Using heroin once does not instantly rewire your brain chemistry or create physical dependence. But here’s the catch: opioid receptors in your brain are highly sensitive. That first use can create a euphoric response that some people chase for years — especially if they’re dealing with acute pain, trauma, or mental health struggles.
And in today’s climate, that first-time use could very well be your last. Why? Because many opioid drugs on the streets are cut with fentanyl, dramatically increasing the risk of overdose, especially for new users who have zero tolerance.
Fact: You may not become addicted after one use, but you may die from it. First-time users are at a higher risk of fatal outcomes.

Myth #2:"People Can Quit Opioids If They Really Want To"

This one hurts — because it blames the person instead of the disease. I assure you, I enjoyed no part of repeatedly losing homes, vehicles, relationships, family members, careers, loved ones, etc. I watched all those I cared about fall in the war on drugs, some before my very eyes, and despite knowing that they died as a result of their drug addictions, I sank deeper and more relentlessly than ever into my own. I didn’t choose it, but my lack of options and the system’s failures repeatedly threw me back to that same cycle time and again.
Opioid use disorder is not a lack of willpower. It’s a complex disease impacted by genetic factors, environmental factors, trauma history, and more. Once the brain has been altered by prolonged drug use, quitting “cold turkey” isn’t just hard — it can be physically dangerous.
Withdrawal symptoms from opioid medication can include nausea, abdominal pain, tremors, anxiety, depression, and intense cravings. Many people go back to using simply to make the sickness stop — not to “get high.”
That’s why medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is considered effective treatment. MAT combines medications like methadone or buprenorphine with therapy and support, helping stabilize the brain while addressing the root causes of addiction. It’s not replacing one drug with another — it’s a therapeutic approach backed by science.
Fact: Addiction is a chronic condition, and like diabetes or heart disease, it requires ongoing care — not shame.

Myth #3: "Only Street Drugs Like Heroin Are Addictive"

This myth is not only false — it’s deadly.
Many people develop opioid dependence through prescription drugs prescribed for chronic pain or acute pain management. They follow prescription instructions, often given by well-meaning healthcare professionals, unaware of the addictive properties of these medications.
Drugs like oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine — often referred to as Rx drugs or opioid medicines — interact with the same nerve cells and opioid receptors in the brain as heroin. They may feel safe, but misuse can happen in a short period of time, especially when taken at a higher dose or outside of the prescribed method.
Scary stat: Over 80% of heroin users started with prescription opioids.
Another reality: Opioid-induced hyperalgesia can make your pain worse over time — a paradox where pain medication causes more sensitivity to pain.

Myth #4: "You Can Spot an Addict Just by Looking at Them"

The media has painted a stereotypical image of a “junkie” — disheveled, unemployed, living on the margins of society. But the truth? Opioid users come from every walk of life: lawyers, teachers, moms, teens, veterans, CEOs.
Substance use disorder doesn’t care about your job, your income, or your zip code. In fact, many are functioning in plain sight — using prescribed opioids, struggling in silence, afraid to speak up due to stigma.
Programs like Alcoholics Anonymous, 12-step programs, and the Maryland Overdose Response Program (ORP) are helping people reclaim their lives. The ORP website also offers hands-on training and health information about the Good Samaritan Law, emergency overdose situations, and how to administer naloxone — a life-saving drug that reverses opioid overdose.

Let's Change the Conversation

We’re living in the middle of an opioid epidemic — and the misinformation around it is making things worse. If we want to truly help people struggling with substance use disorder, we need to lead with facts, not fear. With empathy, not judgment.
So the next time you hear someone say:

“They brought it on themselves.”
“One hit and it’s over.”
“They just don’t want help.”

The opioid crisis is not going away quietly. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, millions of Americans misused prescription medication or engaged in drug use involving illegal drugs last year. But here’s what we know: Long-term success is possible. Recovery is real. And it starts with truth.
Whether you’re someone struggling, someone who loves someone struggling, or someone trying to better understand this epidemic, know this: you’re not alone. There are mental health services, treatment programs, and support systems — even if financial constraints or lack of access in the health care system have made it feel out of reach.
If no one else has told you today, you are worth saving. The first step is learning. The next step is asking for help.

Let’s get one thing straight— people-pleasing in addiction recovery doesn’t make you a bad person. On the contrary, many of us in addiction recovery start out with the best intentions. We want to help. We want to fix things. We want to make up for the pain we caused or the negative emotions we stirred up in others when we were using.
But somewhere along the way, our desire to be a good person turns into a type of behavior that harms more than helps. Constantly pleasing others, putting the needs of others before our own needs, and ignoring our true feelings become a habit—one we justify with all the right reasons.
“I don’t want to hurt their feelings.”“I just want to be a good friend.”“I don’t want them to think I’ve changed in a bad way.”“I have spare time—what’s the harm?”
Sound familiar?

The First Step: Admitting I Was a Chronic People Pleaser

I didn’t always recognize my people-pleasing in addiction recovery tendencies. In fact, I thought they were a good thing—a sign that I was healing, becoming more compassionate, living my values. I hadn’t been so caring, compassionate, and empathetic during active substance use.
Deep down, I wasn’t honoring my own needs or my core values. I was breaking promises to myself to keep promises to other people in both versions of myself—one that gave much too much and one that gave very little.

The worst part? I was doing it all with a smile. You’d never know I was drowning by looking at my facial expressions. I had perfected the art of hiding my exhaustion, stuffing down my true self, and showing up for people who would never do the same for me.
I didn’t realize how often I said yes when I wanted to say no. How often I ignored my own coping mechanisms to accommodate the desires of others. I thought I was being helpful, but the truth? I was betraying myself every single day.

Living With an Empty Cup

There’s a saying: you can’t pour from an empty cup. Let me tell you, I tried.
For a long time, I let people sleep on my couch, borrow money I didn’t have, and dump their emotional baggage all over my living room floor. I turned myself into a shelter, a therapist, a free Uber, and an emotional punching bag—depending on the person and the day.
And for what?
I wasn’t helping anyone in a healthy way. I was just reinforcing their dependence and avoiding my own growth. What I needed was space. Time. Rest. Healing. I needed to add myself to my own damn to-do list.

The Root of My People-Pleasing Behaviors

Like many human beings who come from trauma or suffer from mental health issues, I had this deep-rooted fear of rejection. A chronic, gnawing fear of abandonment. A desperate craving for external validation because somewhere along the line, I learned that my worth was tied to positive responses from others.
That’s how unhealthy relationships form. And here’s the kicker—many of us develop these people-pleasing behaviors as survival tactics.

Maybe you grew up trying to appease an angry parent. Maybe you learned to become hyper-aware of interpersonal reactions just to avoid conflict. Maybe, like me, you came from an abusive relationship, or several.
Whatever the source, the result is the same: we begin sacrificing ourselves on the altar of being liked. We start ignoring our personal values, tolerating things that go against our core beliefs, and molding ourselves into whatever version of “nice” or “easy” other people prefer.

When Helping Becomes Another Addiction

Helping people felt good—until it didn’t.
When you’re used to feeling powerless, being the hero gives you a temporary high. I used to say yes to everyone because I wanted to feel needed. I was chasing that same old fix—control. Relief. Purpose. And it became one more addiction I had to recover from.
In some twisted way, pleasing others gave me a buzz. Nothing like the buzz I used to get from using. But just like drugs, it came with negative thoughts, emotional hangovers, and real-world consequences.
People started calling my job, threatening my safety, abusing my kindness. I kept trying to justify it—“They’re just going through something,” “They don’t have anyone else,” “It’s only temporary.”
Let me be clear: being a servant of Christ doesn’t mean becoming someone’s doormat. And being a life coach, helper, or healer doesn’t mean abandoning your own healing.

Why It’s So Hard to Say No

If you’re having a hard time saying no, I see you.
Maybe you’re scared someone won’t like you anymore. Maybe you’re afraid you’ll lose a family member, a trusted friend, or someone who leans on you. Maybe you don’t want to appear selfish or ungrateful for the second chance at life recovery has given you.
But here’s the truth bomb that shook me to my core:

You’re allowed to choose you.You’re allowed to disappoint people.You’re allowed to honor your current capacity.
And not only is that okay—it’s the best way to protect your peace, preserve your energy, and finally meet your deepest desires for freedom and growth.

Setting Healthy Boundaries: My Non-Negotiables

Let me tell you something I wish someone told me years ago: you can’t save anyone else until you’ve saved yourself.
I had to learn how to set boundaries like my life depended on it—because it actually did.
Boundaries don’t make you mean. They make you healthy. Saying no isn’t a bad thing. It’s the most authentic thing you can do. Your true self deserves that respect.
It started with baby steps:

“I can’t take on anything extra right now.”

“That’s not something I can help with.”

“I’m focusing on my personal growth and need to step back.”

“I’m not available to talk tonight. I need rest.”

And guess what? Some people walked away.
But the ones who stayed? They were the ones who loved me for who I really was—not what I could do for them.

Practical Advice for Breaking the Cycle

Here’s what helped me break free from the people-pleaser cycle:

Identify the Pattern – Look at your calendar. Your inbox. Your texts. Who are you always saying yes to, and why?

Reflect on the Why – Is it fear? Guilt? Habit? A need to control how others see you?

Get Clear on Your Core Values – Write them down. Use them as a compass.

4. Start Practicing Difficult Conversations – They get easier with time.
5. Try Mindfulness Activities – When you get in the habit of checking in with yourself, you’ll notice when you’re crossing your own lines.
6. Seek Support – A therapist, a support group, or even a solid, trusted friend can hold you accountable.
7. Cut Off What Doesn’t Serve You – That means people, too, even if they’ve been around a long time.

The Wake-Up Call

One day, I asked my six-year-old, “When do you see mommy do something for herself?” She thought about it and replied, “does a shower count?”
That moment gutted me.
Here I was preaching self-care, giving away free workbooks, and coaching others on how to heal, and the only thing I did for myself was take a shower.
That wasn’t a wake-up call. That was a fire alarm.
I had to start showing up for me. And not just when it was convenient or when everyone else was taken care of. I had to put myself at the top of the list—not last, not later—now.
I won’t lie to you. This is something I still struggle with pretty much daily. It’s not easy. For me, it’s so hard. I’m working on it, though. That’s all it takes. A commitment to make progress. You can do that. I know you can.

Final Thoughts: Do This for You

Listen, being a nice guy or a good friend isn’t about self-sacrifice at the expense of your sanity. It’s about showing up in a way that’s sustainable, that reflects your authentic self, and that allows you to live life on your own terms.
We get to a point when enough is enough. Being a people pleaser was not something I did when using. WHen actively using I tended more towards being a complete bitch. I didn’t want to get back there either. I know now it was a defense mechanism. It was how I protected myself. I may not have a friend in the world, but I don’t have to watch my back either.
If you have to watch your back with your friends, they are not your friends. Please don’t forget that. The same people I called friends are making fun of me, my blog, and my mission. Fuck em. I see them for what they are now. Jealous.
Please don’t waste the time I wasted figuring it out.
If you take one thing from this post, let it be this:
You are allowed to have limits. You are allowed to have needs. And you are allowed to put yourself first.
So, what I don’t have “friends” anymore, but I do have peace. I have clarity. I have my dignity back. And I’m no longer the unpaid emotional laborer for people who wouldn’t throw me a life vest if I were drowning. I see it so clearly now.
This isn’t easy, and it’s not supposed to be.
But it is worth it. I promise you. I am happier and lighter than I have ever been, and you will be too.

I want only to help you elevate as I have elevated, so I share what I’ve learned. Have you ever heard a sound so subtle, so oddly captivating, that you couldn’t quite explain its impact—but you knew something inside you was shifting? That’s the quiet magic of binaural beat stimulation. Unlike typical focus music playlists on social media, binaural beats are rooted in both ancient cultures and recent studies in neuroscience. When used intentionally, this auditory tool can support mental health, aid in cognitive function, and elevate your spiritual and emotional well-being.
If you’re seeking better sleep, reduced anxiety, enhanced focus, or deeper meditation, learning how binaural beats work might just be your missing link.

What Are Binaural Beats—and How Do They Work?

Let’s break it down. When a person listens to one single tone in the left ear (say 200 Hz) and an additional tone—a slightly different frequency like 208 Hz—in the right ear, the brain doesn’t hear them separately. Instead, the frequency difference (in this case, 8 Hz) is perceived as a third tone, the binaural beat. This illusion is generated in the brain stem, specifically in the superior olivary complex, where the brain processes electrical signals from both ears.
This internal creation of a new frequency leads to changes in brain wave activity, depending on the frequency range of the beat. That’s the basis of the brainwave entrainment hypothesis, which suggests that exposure to different sound frequencies can help sync your mental states to a desired effect.

Inside the Brain: Brainwaves, Frequencies, and You

Each state of consciousness we move through—sleep, focus, creativity—correlates with a specific brainwave activity. Here’s how I like to think about them:

Delta Waves (0.5–4 Hz): These low-frequency tones are essential for deep sleep and physical healing. I use this range before bed to hit the reset button on my body.
Theta Pattern (4–8 Hz): Known for sparking creativity and introspection, these frequencies support meditation and even astral projection. This is the sweet spot for dreamwork and spiritual practices.
Alpha Waves (8–12 Hz): Perfect for calm alertness—journaling, walking, or self-reflection. It’s my go-to state for grounding and clarity.
Beta Waves (12–30 Hz): The high-performance range for decision-making, tasks, and focus. This is when you need to be fully locked in.
Higher Frequencies (30+ Hz / Gamma Waves): These are often associated with divergent thinking, peak consciousness, and those brilliant flashes of insight.

By using tones of different frequencies, you can choose what kind of mental state to tune into, just like changing the dial on a radio. It’s not just music therapy—it’s a method for hacking your awareness with purpose.

Binaural Beats vs Monaural Beats

Unlike monaural beats, which are created by combining frequencies externally, binaural beats occur entirely within the brain. This internal process is believed to generate more impactful synchronization of brain function. While both can be used for binaural beat therapy, the unique effect of binaural beats lies in how they interact with your neural pathways—in a sense, training your mind to access new possibilities.

How to Use Binaural Beats (and Make Them Work for You)

You don’t need to be a neuroscientist or a mystic to tap into this tool. Whether you’re experimenting for the first time or enhancing your current ritual, here’s a quick note on how to align sound with purpose:
1. For Better Sleep:

Use low-frequency tones in the delta range (1–4 Hz) about 30 minutes before bed. Pair it with ambient noise to block interruptions and improve brain wave activity.

2. For Focus or Studying:

Choose beta wave tracks in the 14–18 Hz range. This can support cognitive function, working memory, and productivity during challenging tasks.

3. For Meditation or Astral Travel:

Engage the theta pattern (4–8 Hz) using simple sound repetition paired with deep breathing. This is the ideal zone for consciousness exploration and altered states.

4. For Anxiety Relief:

An 8 Hz tone in the alpha wave band has shown promise in small studies to reduce anxious thoughts and rebalance emotional energy.

What The Research Tells Us

An early study from the 1830s by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove first documented this phenomenon. Since then, pilot studies, small studies, and recent studies continue to investigate the effects of binaural beats. While some scientists call for more double-blind trials, others highlight the growing base of scientific evidence.
Given that binaural beat therapy doesn’t involve pharmaceuticals, has no negative side effects, and protects your data privacy, it stands out as a safe, effective, and accessible tool for personal growth.

The Magic in the Music: A New Kind of Creation

These days, I even experiment with the creation of binaural beats music myself. Every time I press play, I’m choosing to lead my brain—not follow it. Whether I’m seeking focus, healing, or deep connection, I find that a different frequency unlocks a different part of me.
So, is this just science? Or is it modern magic cloaked in sound?
Maybe it’s both.

The Astral Gateway: Using Binaural Beats for Astral Projection

Here’s where it gets wild—binaural beats can be a serious tool for astral projection.
If you’re new to the concept, astral projection refers to the experience of separating your consciousness from your physical body. You might feel yourself floating, flying, or exploring spaces beyond this realm. For centuries, seekers have used sound, breathwork, and meditation to reach this state.
Now, science meets spirit.
Certain theta wave frequencies (around 4–7 Hz) are particularly effective in inducing the meditative state required for astral travel. Robert Monroe, the CIA, and the Sound Technology That’s Been Kept Quiet for Too Long

The first time I came across Robert Monroe, it was through a random thread buried deep in a forum about consciousness and sound frequency. Someone had mentioned something called the Gateway Experience, and I was instantly curious.
Little did I know, I was about to fall down a rabbit hole that would completely reshape how I saw binaural beats, astral projection, and even reality itself.

The Man Behind the Movement: Who Was Robert Monroe?

Robert Monroe wasn’t a mystic or a guru. He was a successful radio broadcasting executive in the 1950s—hardly the type of person you’d expect to pioneer out-of-body exploration. But that’s exactly what happened.
In his 40s, Monroe began experiencing spontaneous, uncontrollable out-of-body experiences (OBEs)—and instead of dismissing them or running from them, he documented everything. And I mean everything. He was analytical, methodical, and focused on testing these phenomena with as little bias as possible.
He created a lab in Virginia, equipped it with sound equipment, monitoring devices, and even volunteers. Over time, he refined a technique using specific sound frequencies to induce altered states of consciousness, and that eventually became the foundation for what we now know as binaural beat therapy.
He called the system Hemi-Sync®—short for hemispheric synchronization. The idea was that if you presented two slightly different frequencies to each ear (say 100 Hz in the left and 108 Hz in the right), your brain would create a third tone and sync both hemispheres to that frequency.
And here’s where it gets even more fascinating…

The Gateway Experience & CIA Involvement: Not a Conspiracy—A Declassified Reality

In 2003, the CIA quietly declassified a 29-page document titled Analysis and Assessment of Gateway Process. It was written in 1983 by U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Wayne M. McDonnell and focused entirely on Monroe’s work.
This wasn’t a fringe interest—they were seriously studying Hemi-Sync as a method of accessing non-ordinary states of consciousness for intelligence gathering, remote viewing, and mind-body healing.
According to the report, the Monroe Institute had created a reliable system to help people enter deep meditative states, access higher consciousness, and even step outside of time and space. The document dives into subjects like the holographic universe theory, quantum energy fields, and how the brain acts like an antenna for reality.
Let that sink in: the U.S. government spent actual resources researching consciousness expansion through sound frequency manipulation—and not just for fun, but because it worked.

Uncommon Proof: What They Didn’t Teach Us in School

Here’s something you won’t hear in most mainstream discussions about binaural beats—the Monroe Institute ran structured, replicable experiments for decades.
Their participants reported consistent results: OBEs, astral travel, pain relief, enhanced cognitive function, and profound emotional healing. Many of them had no prior meditation experience, which is important because it proves this wasn’t just for “spiritual types”—it was for anyone.
What truly blew my mind was learning about The Explorer Tapes—a collection of more than 30 sessions recorded in the 1970s and ‘80s where individuals entered altered states using Monroe’s sound technology while scientists asked questions in real time.
These weren’t vague, trippy descriptions. They were precise, detailed, and shockingly similar across subjects. Descriptions of energy patterns, nonphysical beings, and multidimensional travel came up again and again.
Even NASA scientists and Department of Defense personnel quietly visited the Monroe Institute over the years.

So… Why Haven’t We Heard More About This?

Good question.
Maybe it’s because what Monroe discovered challenges the very foundation of what we think is real. Or maybe it’s because the technology is so powerful, it’s been carefully kept out of the mainstream spotlight, which is actually very easy considering the same families own all of the big news channels.
But thanks to declassified documents, Monroe’s own books (Journeys Out of the Body, Far Journeys, and Ultimate Journey), and the work still being done at the Monroe Institute today, the veil is finally lifting. Also, check out the CIA’s The Gateway document.

Addiction Thrives In the Absence of Meaning

Let’s be real for a second: if you’ve ever clawed your way out of active addiction—especially the kind that wraps around your neck like a noose—you know survival isn’t enough. Staying alive is the first step. But what keeps you from going back isn’t just staying sober… it’s finding something worth staying sober for. That, my friend, is purpose. And it might just be the most powerful tool you’ll ever have in your recovery journey.
If you’ve been through the hell I have—a nearly twenty year cycle of heroin addiction and incarceration, in and out of jail, detoxes, trauma, shame, all of it—then you know what it means to wake up one day and not recognize the person in the mirror. But now, nine years into long-term recovery, with two beautiful kids, a home I own, investments, crypto holdings, a blog, a coaching business, and a life I never thought I’d get to live—I can say with full conviction that the process of finding purpose after addiction saved me just as much as getting clean did.
This isn’t a cliché post about how “things get better.” This is about the raw truth: if you don’t find a clear sense of purpose in your daily life, something bigger than just staying sober, then you run a much higher risk of relapse. Why? Because addiction, especially substance use disorders like heroin or alcohol addiction, thrives in the absence of meaning.
Let me talk to the version of you that’s hanging on by a thread. The version who’s maybe white-knuckling it. Whether you’re actively using, on an early recovery journey, have reached long-term sobriety, are on a journey of self-discovery, suffer from mental illness, or maybe you arent using substances at all but are struggling and just going through the motions without a clear sense of purpose, who wants to know who they are without the chaos? I know that version well—I was her.

Small Unexpected Acts of Kindness

For me, finding purpose didn’t happen all at once. I didn’t wake up knowing I wanted to become an entrepreneur, coach people, write about recovery and personal development, or build a life that feels this full.
Remember, purpose isn’t found. It’s created—through daily life, through consistent effort, and through a commitment to becoming your authentic self. That version of you is already inside. S/he’s/They’re just waiting for you to remember.
It started with really small things before I stopped my hustling and using. I started smiling at strangers passing in cars while taking a walk, chatting up elderly men and women in the grocery store.  Writing in a gratitude journal and meaning it.
Learning new things. Setting tiny, achievable goals—like making my bed or keeping a commitment. Sounds basic, right? But after years of active addiction, those were wins. Each one gave me a little spark of self-trust. A sense of accomplishment. And over time, that built something that looked a lot like hope.
Some time passed, and I realized that I felt the most whole during or after helping people, especially those who were struggling with substances or mental health issues. 

The Best Feeling in the World

It felt so good to be of use to someone for once. I became a recovery coach, and one day, when I got to one of my client’s homes, she confided that there were two people detoxing on her floor. It was bad. I remember I couldn’t help but shudder when the detox smell hit me like a brick wall. I did not miss this.
They were pretty upset when I rolled on in and started telling them to get up because we were going for a ride. I asked them if they wanted to keep shitting all over themselves or if they wanted to get well. This got them moving.
I brought them to the emergency department, gave them my business card, and let them know that my business card was a ticket to not only getting dosed with Suboxone but also to leave with nine doses.
I picked them up at the end of my workday, keep in mind these two were not my clients. I just couldn’t let them lie there like they were. They were so grateful. We all were in tears by the time I dropped them off.
Here is the best part. The ED contacted the woman the next day and let her know she was pregnant. She reached out to me, and she became a client. It turns out she was four months pregnant, and the doctor told her that had she continued to go the way she was, she would have lost that baby. Her boyfriend bounced ER, but she just celebrated four years. 
My point is that helping these people felt amazing for the short-term, but when someone I work with has something like a four-year milestone, and they attribute it to you- its the best feeling in the world, man, I can’t even.

A Life You Can Be Proud Of

Eventually, I realized I was building something. A sober life I could be proud of. A purpose-driven, altruistic life that felt connected to my core values. Something that honored the pain I’d been through without being defined by it. I started to lean into personal growth. I made meaningful connections with more people who’d walked through similar challenges. And I gave myself permission to dream again.
Listen—purpose doesn’t have to look like a big, flashy dream. It can be your kids. Your art. A new hobby. Volunteering. Your career. Writing your story. Being of service. Helping others or just listening to what another has to say and allowing them to feel heard. Whatever makes you feel like your life means something beyond just “not using.” Purpose is what turns recovery into living.
When I look back at my many years of failed attempts at sobriety and reintegration into the community from “finishing school,” the one thing I was never able to get was gainful employment. No matter what I did or how hard I tried, nobody would give me a chance. Nobody would give me a purpose and I hadn’t yet found the self-love to think I deserved a purpose.
Remember, this was before addiction was considered a disease. I never lost hope that it might happen, and every time I was released, I tried just as hard as the times before, but small town, making the newspaper, and being the first real heroin raid in my town- I can’t really blame them. 

Connected to a Clear Purpose

When I found out I was pregnant with my daughter at the age of thirty-five, it wasn’t about me anymore. I finally had a purpose and I wasn’t going to mess it up for once in my life. I decided that I wasn’t going to allow her to see me for what I’ve done but to see how far I have come and be inspired and motivated by my journey, so I had a lot of work to do. I’m still doing it.  
I became an addiction recovery coach, and for the first time in my life, I felt valued, important, and heard. I have never in life felt comfortable. Not even a little. I have felt like I am wearing a skin suit that is not only five sizes too small but also has a Mack truck tire around it. I was a voice for those who didn’t feel they deserved to be heard, and I still am.
When you’re connected to a clear purpose, you’re less likely to fall back into old patterns. Purpose helps with mental illness and substance use disorders because it gives structure, meaning, and a sense of belonging. It doesn’t erase the hard days, but it gives you something to hold onto during them.
And if you’re not there yet, don’t worry. You don’t have to have it all figured out. Thats exactly why I share my experiences. In hopes that you might figure things out before I did and not waste your life away fighting at jails, institutions, and death.
Finding your purpose after addiction is a process. Start small. Set a specific goal. Try something new. Explore new interests. Write about your past struggles and what you want next, and I will publish your story here. There are no rules with purpose. Grab something, anything, anywhere, and hold on for dear life because it is essential for success. 
Even if you have to seek something outside of yourself at first, in time, you will be wherever it is you need to be, but until then, fake it until you make it. For me, it was my late-in-life children, but also it was as it is now. 

One Tiny Action

I have to help people on the largest scale possible, and this has been enough. I have destroyed myself for this blog to give people hope. It’s the hardest thing I have ever done. Some days, I work sixteen hours, only taking breaks for QT with the kiddos. Failure is not an option this time. It’s NOT gonna happen. It can’t. I can feel that I am here doing this for a reason. Whether I help 1 person or millions it will make it all worth it. It’s all I’m aiming for. Help one person and then another and another, and so on. Your purpose might not shout—it might whisper. But if you get quiet enough, you’ll hear it.
Here’s the good news: you don’t need to become someone else. You just need to reunite with your true self. The you that existed before the pain, before the trauma, before the substances or mental illness tried to steal your light. That you is still in there, waiting. And the second you start moving toward a meaningful life—whatever that means to you—everything starts to change, and things begin to just fall into place- sometimes right into your lap.
I’m not promising rainbows. I still have hard days. But I’m living a purposeful life now. A life that feels real. And I want that for you too. A life with a sense of direction. With achievable, meaningful goals. With joy in the present moment and a future that feels wide open. 
If nobody’s told you lately, let me be the one: You’re loved. It’s not your fault. You’re not broken. You’re a powerful creator. And you’re worthy and capable of building a life that feels worth living.
So, take the next step. One tiny action. That’s how the recovery process works—one foot in front of the other. You don’t have to know where it all leads. Just trust that it’s leading somewhere better.
And don’t forget—you’re never alone. There’s a whole world of possibilities out here waiting for you.
 

This is Your Sign

If you’re still in the early recovery phase, or even just thinking about getting clean, let this be your sign: you were never broken. You were never worthless. You were searching. And now, you have a chance to take everything you’ve been through and use it as a blueprint to build a new life. A meaningful one. A purposeful one.
You don’t have to know exactly what your purpose is yet. That will come. All you need to do is trust that it’s there, that it’s calling to you through the noise, and that you are powerful enough to answer.
Your journey of recovery is a transformative journey. You are not behind. You are becoming.
And I promise you: a life with purpose is not just possible—
It’s worth living.
